Interesting...

We've been looking for a Subaru hatchback to replace the family car that shat itself on us...and nearly every one in this area is way overpriced...like around $2,000 over fair market in KBB.

  1. KBB...fair market value? How quaint. Seriously, good luck finding a Subaru (or any all wheel drive) for cheap when there is snow on the ground.

    1. At even the suggested retail price (half of what they've got it priced), we can go to the bank and pay cash straight up. At what they've got it priced, with the mileage it's got? Yeah, not a buyer at that price. At all.

  2. Wrong time of year to look for an AWD. Just like spring is the wrong time to long for a convertible. How's the Camry and Altima market? They seat 5. Reliable. If close to or over 100,000 miles make sure they've had the oxygen sensors replaced. (that basically applies to all cars, though.)

    1. We really need a hatchback so we can transport the dog as well as the kids. We'd prefer a Subaru, but we'd settle for a Honda CR-V.

  3. Honda makes a damfine vehicle, make sure the planned maintenance has been done on it. If you're looking at Subarus that are anywhere near 105K make sure the timing belt has been replaced (four cylinder models, not sure about the six cylinder ones) and check for any kind of head gasket leaking, oil or coolant. They won't leak on the ground because they have a splash shield installed under the engine, so you have to open the hood and check from the top. Avoid any of them that have oil or coolant leaks unless you know a good mechanic that works for cheap.

    1. We've got a Civic that we like quite a bit--bought it for a very good price when it only had 14,000 miles on it in 2004. We've since put around 170,000 miles on it. If I didn't like Subarus as well as I do, we'd just be looking for a Honda.
