I was, unfortunately, right.

President Obama is definitely setting us up for an attack. After all, that's what jackals do when they sense weakness.

And we are signalling weakness. We're signalling weakness with that horse's ass we put into the oval office with a 53% vote.

He's offered to open diplomatic relations with Iran. Iran's president immediately said that that signaled "failure" on our part. And since Iran is nearly a nuclear power, thanks to anemic responses by the previous administration, and the restraint we've placed on Israel, we will be bloodied by this assumption.

If paying taxes is patriotic, then what does that make these two?

First, President Obama nominates Tim Geithner, a man who failed to pay the employer's portion of taxes on his housemaid ("but I didn't understand how to work Turbotax...no, really) for Secretary of the Treasury.

No irony there.

Then he nominates Tom Daschle, a man who made a similar mistake, neglecting to declare a car and chauffer "loaned" to him by a rich friend on his taxes, to be Secretary of Health.

Of equal irony with the Geithner pick is that Daschle has taken money from health interests that stand to gain from his nomination and placement in the cabinet, as well as from President Obama's socialized medicine plans.

You know, I was hopeful that this administration wouldn't turn out as corrupt as President Obama's background in Chicago politics suggested it probably would. I thought that, with his declaration that there would be no Capitol Hill/political lobby revolving door, or acceptance of bribes--I mean, gifts--it might well turn out better than I feared.

I feel stupid for feeling hopeful that there would be change for the better.

I'm not the only one paranoid enough to wonder.

A "disgruntled ex-employee" wrote a virus into Fannie Mae's server. It would have spread through all of the Fannie Mae servers, destroying information.

I'd think that would be a great thing for the ones at fault for the meltdown. And I'm not the first to blog on it.

Oh, yeah, like that's going to help us.

I can't wait to see how the Obamessiah handles this one. Hypocrite that he is, he has to see just how much danger that asshole put us in from the radical Islamofacists.

Raping Muslim women. On videotape. As the CIA station chief in Algeria.

Sometimes, I see the far left's point about how awful we can be.

In regarding to the legalized more than $800 billion theft?

I'm with Rush. And I don't even like the guy.

However. I also do not like the "bailout." I think it's a bad idea. I think it will make the Great Depression look no worse than the tech bubble of the 90s. I'm glad that all the Republicans voted against it (though, since my state's Republican representative voted for the first one, I will not vote for him for Senate).

I doubt, however, that they voted against it for the right reasons. It seems more likely to me that they didn't get the pork they wanted (despite what Pelosi said), than that they were taking a principled stand against what was there.

I think this bailout will come back to bite President Obama in the ass. I think that him telling Republicans to stop listening to Limbaugh will both bite President Obama in the ass, and swell Limbaugh's considerable ego to further intolerable levels. I think that the "I won" statement (i.e., you lost, so I get to do what I want) will come back to bite him in the ass.

President Obama. Yes, you won an unprecedented 53% of the vote. However. I do not believe that gives you a mandate from the people to do whatever the hell you want. I think that, rather, people did not see a difference between you and McCain (his mistake, not yours--you took admirable advantage of that lack of distinction), and decided to vote for the smoother, better looking, history-making candidate.

And yes, I'm saying you were elected because you weren't an ugly old white guy with a reedy voice.

You certainly weren't elected for the ideas that you didn't elaborate on in your vague messages of hope and change.

Only to be expected from these clowns.

Indeed. After all, Hamas is just Iran in traditional desert robes.

To all the liberals out there: I have a suggestion for "fairness."

Let's see how far we get with this idea with regards to the "fairness doctrine."

You want "equal time" for your liberal views on talk radio, whether or not it's profitable for the radio stations (it isn't--Al Franken proved that).

Fair enough. Give conservative views equal time in traditional main stream media. I mean, yeah, we've got Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck (who's now on Fox), Sean Hannity (also on Fox), John Gibson, and Laura Ingrahm, but they're usually all on the same, single, AM radio station.

You have CNN, CNBC, Headline News, and the major networks (ABC, CBS, NBC). You have PBS. You have the newspapers. You also have your own talk radio station with NPR (government funded, by the way--doesn't bring in enough revenue on its own).

You want "equal time" in talk radio? Give us equal time in the main stream media.

Oh, don't want to do that? In that case, your "fairness doctrine" means nothing more than "we want people exposed to our views only."

And in that case, I have another suggestion for you...

Interesting.

Some idjuts in Texas hacked a roadsign. It's pretty funny, but I've got paranoid friends that have read the Zombie Survival Guide that probably would be laughing, but prepping for an outbreak.

Bring back global warming.

This weather? This nastiness in the Midwest? It killed one of my former students.

We had the "storm of the century" two years ago in January. Then a year ago in December. The only reason it hasn't knocked out power in my area this time is because it did both times before, and there are simply no more tree branches near the power lines.

That doesn't mean it doesn't endanger my friends (one of whom rolled her SUV--thank God she's not hurt), and kill my students.

I hate this icy shit.

The new, improved second ammendment.

Our current second amendment, the one which our founding fathers insisted be tacked onto the Constitution, reads "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

This amendment has been interpreted in several different ways, almost all of them wrong. Many anti-gun nuts argue that the word "militia" is key, or possibly the words "well regulated." They say that the National Guard fulfills the intent of this amendment, and therefore, civilians shouldn't be allowed the nasty, dangerous weapons. At all.

That's been shot down, on the Supreme Court level, more than once; in fact, it was shot down most recently with the overturning of the D.C. gun ban.

So, what do the anti-gun lobby do next? They attempt to control the kind of gun that people can buy, and attempt to force everyone to register certain kinds of guns. H.R. 45, introduced earlier this year, and currently referred to the House Judiciary Committee, seeks to do just that: its author wants to force all gun owners to have to register any semi-auto handgun, and any gun that has a detachable magazine. Owners will have to have a licence to own these guns. Sellers will not be able to sell these guns without the buyer having the licence. It's a short step from this to banning the kind of guns that have detachable magazines. And the requirement to register those guns will have in place a list of owners from which these guns can be--and will be--seized.

This goes directly against the Founding Fathers' intent in framing that amendment. The Founding Fathers feared nothing more than they feared a powerful, central government trampling the rights of the people. They believed an armed citizen was a citizen that could stand up to their government when, not if, it became tyrannical.

You see, the amendment, in the language of the times, means that every civilian should be competent at hitting the target they aim at ("well regulated militia) in order to preserve their freedom ("security of the free state"); therefore, the right of the average citizen to own, use, practice with, transport either within their home or between their home and wherever they practice and/or hunt (keep and bear arms), is not to be curtailed, cut short, modified, or messed with in any way, shape, or form (shall not be infringed).

Clearly, our current government intends to become tyrannical. They fear an armed citizenry. Otherwise, they wouldn't keep trying to revise the second amendment to remove the word "not."

For the safety of the children, of course.

That wasn't nice.

Funny, but not nice. You shouldn't make fun of people who've been led to believe the global warming hype to the point that they think they'll never see snow again.

Washington, D.C., is not used to winter weather. They're not used to iced in conditions. The infrastructure is not prepared to handle it. You'd think President Obama would be aware of that, given how long he's been a senator.

Oh, wait: he hasn't been a senator that long. He may have thought that D.C.'s climate being warmer than Chicago's was because of global warming.

Opportunities abound

Our new secretary of state says that, with President Obama's intention to change direction in the Middle East, Iran has a "clear opportunity" to behave itself.

Sure they do.

However, President Obama's declaration to the Arab world that he counts them, their terrorists, and their terrorists' ideology, more important than the people who elected them (closing Guantanamo Bay and other military prisions overseas, going on an Arabic news station for his first presidential interview, implying such in the inaugral address, etc.,), Iran also has the clear opportunity to develop nuclear weapons. This year.

Given that our Dear Leader has also made a stand against missile shield technology, I wonder which of our cities will get hit first by the nuclear-tipped ICBM? Will it be New York again, for the psychological hit? Washington, D.C., for the opportunity to behead the government (and reduce some of our history to radioactive waste)? San Francisco because of its image of immorality (by Muslim and Christian standards, both)?

It's coming. And it will be entirely this current administration's fault when it hits.

Pray that I'm wrong. I am.

That didn't last long.

Children, if you can't quit fighting, we're going to put you in opposite corners.

So much for a cease fire honored by all parties.

Boy, they really haven't gone outside, lately.

Some researchers have declared that some of the so-called climate damage is irreversable, and that temperatures will remain high into the 3000s, even if we were to cease all carbon emissions today.

Clearly, they haven't gone outside or seen a weather report in some time.

A public apology.

Yesterday, I refered to Nancy Pelosi as retarded. I was called on it, and I admit that I was wrong to call her that. People who actually do have special needs probably feel quite insulted.

My bad.

I should have called her what she is, but I really don't like that particular word. I will, however, freely call her a raving, maniacal, rancid twat of a bitch.

Thank goodness her ideas have been axed from the stimulus package.

Stupid ass.

As if a treaty will prevent the nations I'm afraid will shoot at us from, well, shooting at us.

Especially if we allow them into space. Where they can agree with us to our faces, but launch weapons platforms anyway.

Stupid ass. The world is not the friendly, fair playground you think it should be!!

This just in: Nancy Pelosi is retarded

She seems to think that her personal hobby horses will definitely help cure the economy!

Um, no. No they won't. Not enough people are responsible enough to use birth control in the first place. Providing it gratis (or rather, at taxpayer expense) won't save the states any money even in the short run.

Actually, what would save states money would be to quit stepping in (financially) for the baby daddies out there that create children they have no intention of helping raise.

As if that would ever happen.

Um...I didn't want to get into politics, today, but...

I went on over to No Looking Backwards and saw this.

Frankly, there's a lot about the Obama administration that, quite frankly, scares the shit out of me. There are a couple of things that he's done--for example, the declaration about government transparency--that I like, but his decision to close Guantanamo Bay and other overseas detention facilities scares me. I think it scares me most because of his reasoning that the terrorists deserve the same rights as American citizens.

No. They. Do. Not.

Mr. President. If you reject that foreign-born terrorists do not have the same rights as American citizens, you will not only be unable to keep us safe, but the ash will be on your hands when the terrorists--NOT freedom fighters, terrorists--smuggle in a nuclear weapon to take out one of our cities.

And yes, I meant when, not if.

And if you take my guns away, you take away my ability to defend myself and my son when your stupid policies result in your entire fucking government becoming radioactive.

And that's ignoring the rise in crime that your stupid economic policies will produce when they destroy the jobs you claim to be trying to save.

Oh. My. God.

Just how stupid can lawmakers be? I wish they'd quit demonstrating that, no matter how stupid we think they are, they're worse.

I mean, really. First they whinge about kids not reading. Then they pass legislation that will take away books.

Stock up now, folks. This idiot law takes effect on February 10.

Wow. Global warming this ain't.

The UAE had snow--two inches of accumulation--for only the second time in recorded history.

To those who read regularly, I'm sorry.

I had a whole host of things I wanted to comment on. And then the baby got sick to his stomach, and was really too fussy for me to be able to do anything, up to and including feeding myself. He's better today, so I thought I'd do what I could, while I could.

In the meatime, for those who are interested, he's grown. A lot. Let me show you.

This picture was taken while he was still in the hospital, at about four days old. The monkey (used for size comparison) is about ten inches tall, if you stand him up.

This picture was taken last week. Same monkey. Same baby.

And here's one of him smiling. Just because it's cute.

Somebody's got a good sense of humor.

An ice sculptor in Alaska did a 5 ton Al Gore. Shivering. And asked if he wanted to come talk about global warming.

I hate being right.

Looks like the Black Plague incident really was one of al Qaeda's franchise groups playing with something they shouldn't have.

Shit.

I hate being right about stuff like this.

Good luck, Mr. President.

You're going to need it. The world doesn't give a damn about your making history.

It'll only see a new, untested POTUS, and jump onto your back to try to break you.

Not to mention that, thanks to your cronies, your predecessor's leaving you with a bit of a mess.

For what it's worth, I'm praying for you. For all our sakes.

What do you want to bet that this was the KGB--er, I meant FSB?

Human Rights Lawyer, Journalist Shot Dead in Russia

It's interesting that, within the first couple of paragraphs of the story, it's noted that people who oppose government decisions are frequently targeted.

"'This is a horrible, frightening crime,' said Tatyana Lokshina of the Human Rights Watch."

Indeed. It's meant to be. In totalitarian regimes, you don't fight your government . You don't speak against your government. You don't question your government. Ever.

And this is the U-turn that Russia is accelerating along.

About time.

Compean and Ramos have had their sentences commuted. They'll be released in March.

That's the minimum acceptable correction of that particular travesty of justice.

These two individuals were sentenced in 2005 for the crime of doing their jobs as border patrol agents: they stopped a Mexican drug runner who was "smuggling several hundred pounds of marijuana" across the border.

They shot him. In the butt.

As I see it, their main mistake was wounding him instead of killing him.

If ICE didn't want agents shooting drug runners, they shouldn't issue guns.

Timing.

The militants in Gaza are willing to talk truce. Again. And only until they've re-armed and are ready to attack again.

Israel is saying that their objective has been accomplished, and that, barring new hostile acts on the part of the "legitimate" government elected by the people, their troops will be out by the inauguration of the new POTUS.

I can't help but see Iran's hand in a) the timing of the escalation of attacks from Gaza, b) how long Gaza held out, and c) Gaza's willingness to talk peace.

After all, with the inauguration of the new POTUS tomorrow, and that individual's pacifist tendencies, Israel's intentions to shut down Iran's nuclear ambitions will probably have to be tabled.

Or done completely black, given our media's tendencies to sympathize with the terrorists.

Another hysterical global warming fanatic.

According to NASA scientist and "leading climate expert" (blogger's comment: expert my ass!) Jim Hansen, the Messiah that has just been elected, and is about to be sworn in as POTUS, has just four years to save the world from the evil global warming.

What's President Obama supposed to do, hold up his hand to the sun and bid it to stop fucking with our climate? Because it's sure not humans causing the temperature variations.

Besides, global warming, historically, has caused far less hardship to humans and civilization than has global cooling. It was, after all, global cooling that caused mass starvation and wars because of the detrimental changes in the growing seasons and crop yields.

I'm not sure what to think about this.

An al Quaeda camp has been decimated by the Black Plague--forty dead, and the survivors fled.

The evacuation of the infected camp was a really bad idea: "It can be in the body for more than a week — highly contagious but not revealing tell-tale symptoms." Given the way it spreads, and how contagious it is, I have to agree with the security source that said, “This is the deadliest weapon yet in the war against terror. Most of the terrorists do not have the basic medical supplies needed to treat the disease."

While I'm glad to see so many dead at a whack in the training camps, I am rather ambivalent about how they died. On the one hand, I know Bubonic Plague is endemic to that part of the world.

On the other, I'm not sure they weren't messing with possibly weaponized biologicals.

Now, that's going to help. Not.

Dembulbs are planning in their bailout to revoke tax breaks granted to banks as part of the Bush bailout.

Oh, yeah, now that's going to work. They need to be pumping money into banks, not sucking money out.

I wonder how many banks will fold because bigger, healthier banks won't risk buying them since they can't write off the losses anymore?

Thursday, January 15, 2009

Hooray, Israel!

They're still defending themselves, with prejudice. They've blockaded Hamas, refusing to allow Iran to ship in "humanitarian aid" (i.e., new weapons), and they've shelled a Hamas base hiding in a U.N. installation.

It's good to see that Israel will bomb their enemies wherever they find them. And their enemies will hide anywhere:

The radicals are losing their grip

It's the simple courage of girls like these that will take control of Islam away from the radicals and place it in the hands of the moderates.

Oops!

A Utah man had a most embarrassing bathroom accident.

Next time, make sure the holster has a strap to secure the weapon, make sure that strap is fastened, and make sure the safety's on.

Next time, the busted porcelain could wind up somewhere other than his arm.

Do they have nothing but pudding between their ears?

Democrats are pushing for criminal investigation into President Bush's "abuses," like detaining and interrogating foreign non-uniformed combatants (i.e., terrorists), eavesdropping on phone calls between non-citizens and individuals in terrorist-sponsoring nations, and dismissing U.S. attorneys.

I have one question for them: precisely how are these things, each well within a sitting president's constitutional responsibilities, abuses of his power?

A sitting president is the commander in chief of the executive branch. That means that it is his responsibility to carry out those policies that he was hired to carry out: make sure the military does its job, and keep the people safe.

A sitting president does not need to make sure the constitutional rights to the judicial process for the terrorists detained in various military compounds like Abu Ghraib or Guantanamo Bay, because as non-citizens, they have no constitutional rights. A sitting president does not need congressional nor judicial approval to wiretap calls between non-citizens and terrorist-sponsoring nations because non-citizens have no constitutional rights in this country. The attorneys that President Bush fired were hired and served at the discretion of the president.

Were the individuals held in military prison or eavesdropped upon United States citizens, the Democrats might have a case. Were the attorneys fired appointed by congress as a watchdog on the office of the president--which isn't constitutionally legal, so the point is moot--they might have a case.

George Bush has done far less to warrant such harassment than did Abraham Lincoln, the hero of the Democrats. Indeed, if it had been one of their own in power, making the same decision, there would be no questions asked, because they know damn well he had the constitutional authority to take the actions they're questioning.

Quantity does not equal quality.

Osama bin Laden has urged all Muslims to attack Israel, in support of Hamas. Lebanon has jumped into the furball.

I will admit that Israel is completely surrounded by enemies. I will admit that Stalin was right: after a point, quantity has a quality all of its own.

However. I don't think that Israel's enemies in the region have the kind of quantity that will override Israel's military quality. In other words, all the two governments that are trying to swat Israel are doing is setting themselves up to get spanked. With luck, they'll get spanked hard enough that said terrorist-sponsoring governments will collapse.

Is she stupid?

Hillary Clinton called global warming a "security threat," and plans to push for a climate change treaty.

She needs to step outside in Slovenia, wearing earrings. Or Minneapolis, where it hit -40. Or basically anywhere in the Northeast.

The silly bint must think Global Warming will lead us into freezing our asses off. If she were within range, I'd try to slap the stupid out of her.

I'm pretty sure I'd fail, but I'd enjoy every minute.

I'm shocked, just shocked by this behavior on the part of the Russians!

Europe can't believe that Russia broke a promise to them.

Given the tensions between Russia and the Ukraine, and the way Russia is trying to manipulate the world into hating us even more, I don't see how they can be surprised.

And here's another reason we should apply the proper penalties under the Geneva Convention.

The Geneva Convention clearly defines legal combatants as those who wear a nation's uniform, wear their weapons openly, and do not hide amongst civilians. It clearly states that any combatant captured not in a nation's uniform, or hiding amongst civilians, is a spy, and may be summarily executed.

For about thirty-two dollars (two rounds each at about fifty cents each, supposing .223 costs a quarter per round), this would never have happened.

And it's why I think the idea of closing Gitmo is a dumb one.

Here's hoping it's more complicated for the new President-Elect than even he suspects.

There's a switch.

Two men were stoned to death for adultery in Iran. Usually it's women being stoned for being raped.

Monday, January 12, 2009

Good to see.

Someone's giving President Bush credit for what he's gotten right.

Granted, I'd have appreciated having Social Security privatized, at least partially, but I can't argue with Barnes's assessment of what Bush has done right.

Heck, Obama needs to thank Bush for setting things up for him for as easy a presidency for a rookie senator as possible, rather than work to reverse so much of what has been done.

But then again, what do I know? I'm only a part time English professor.

Oh, no. Not the right move at all.

President Elect Obama is setting us up for the next terrorist attack on our soil. He's closing Guantanamo Bay's holding facility.

This is a big, big, big mistake. It looks like we're yielding to outside pressure. We may well be; however, it's justifiable (or it would be) were it a negotiation tool being used in brokering a peace with a sane, responsible regime.

However. We are not working with a sane, responsible regime. We are not even working with an insane irresponsible regime. We're fighting off an aggressive, totalitarian ideology that will see this move as nothing more nor less than America showing weakness. Thus, they will come at us harder.

Beyond that, the reporter writing the story made a heinous mistake: "Detainees held on U.S. soil would have certain legal rights that they were not entitled to while imprisoned in Cuba. It's also not clear if they would face trial through the current military tribunal system, or in federal civilian courts, or though a to-be-developed legal system that would mark a hybrid of the two."

Were these individuals fighting in uniform on behalf of a nation, this might well hold true under the Geneva Convention. However, there are two issues at stake, here.

These prisoners, are not covered by the Geneva Convention. First, they do not fight for a country. They do not fight in uniform. They hide amongst women and children. As such, they break the rules of war that signatories of the Geneva Convention have agreed to abide by amongst themselves. This leads me to the second issue: they haven't signed the Geneva Convention (and even if they had, their treatment of POWs would have broken the agreement), which means that we don't have to abide by it in our dealings with them.

I do not (always) advocate that we don't adhere to the Geneva Convention in dealing with these monsters. It would hurt our troops, on a level that they might or might not understand, to dish out the same treatment.

Besides. The Geneva Convention spells out, very clearly, what the penalties for the behavior displayed by the Gitmo detainees should be. I think we should hold to it, if President-Elect Obama is going to carry out this incredibly poor decision.

Why hit our consulate?

They must be idiots. There's no other way to explain why Pakistani protestors angry about Israel's spanking Hamas would attack our consulate. Or why they think that we control, or even influence, Israel's actions.

Man, the massadras need to be closed and some real schools opened, with universal attendence manditory for both sexes. And all ages. These people are stuck in the dark ages, and they need to come into the bright light of the twenty-first century.

Hell, I'd settle for the nineteenth.

Okay. Why he had a sword, and why the officer shot him, I don't think we, elsewhere in the country, will ever know.

Seven Deadlies: Pride

Over the past few weeks, I’ll be dealing with the seven deadly sins, and their applications in the modern world by those who give lip service to being Christian, and those who declare that sin doesn’t exist.

The seven deadly, or serious, sins are wrath, greed, envy, sloth, lust, gluttony, and pride. I’ve so far covered all but the last—and it’s a doozy.

I don't mean that pride in your accomplishments that's nothing more than a warm feeling of satisfaction. I mean that pride that whispers "I'm better than everyone around me. I know better than my neighbor what's good for him."

So, where in the world do we see that kind of pride? Who thinks they know what's best for everyone more than the political left?

Environmentalists believe that they know better than everyone else what's best for the earth, and since they do, they're going to force everyone to do what they know is Right!

Several government health organizations believe they know better than anyone else what's best for the American population. They issue guidelines. Other people, who believe that they know better than their neighbors what's Right, take those guidelines and pass laws designed to force their ignorant neighbors to do What's Best--bans on smoking in public places, bans on fast food in certain places, bans on advertising food during Saturday morning cartoons. They pass Fat Taxes (one good example is the tax on non-diet soda that New York is discussing). They pass legislation forcing restaurants to print nutrition information (based on the idea that, if others knew what they were eating, they wouldn't eat it because it's Bad For Them).

Many leftist groups believe that they know best how to fight crime--ban guns. We all know how that turns out: the cities that have the most stringent anti-gun laws have the highest violent crime rates. The leftists believe that Guns Are Evil, And Will Hurt You, No Matter How Careful You Are, and since they know best, they'll keep the rest of us from hurting ourselves.

The Mommy Government believes it knows what's best for everyone, and it will pass laws designed to keep people safe and healthy in spite of themselves, just as if we were children. Those beliefs come from the Mortal Sin of Pride.

I used to think that I tended toward this mortal sin. Maybe I do, in some ways; however, I do not think I am better than anyone else, or that I know better than anyone else. I do not believe that, since I know best, it's my responsibility to force everyone to do as I say, for their own sake.

Unfortunately, those that most need to read this, either won't, or won't understand that what's actually best for all is letting them choose their own paths, whether that includes junk food, guns, cigarettes, all of the above, or none of the above.

I'm glad to see that they have the testicular fortitude to keep going.

Israel has rejected a U.N. demand for an immediate cease fire in the Gaza Strip.

It's good to see them standing up for themselves. And they've got more support than they used to: Italy and several of Israel's neighbors support their offensive against the terrorist group that "govern" Gaza.

Govern, indeed. The following illustrate Hamas's idea of "government:"

Looks like somebody needs to go outside.

Several somebodies, in fact: Exxonmobil has come out in support of a carbon tax to help combat global warming. They obviously haven't noticed the record cold and snow this winter.

Oh, please let this be satire...

Unfortunately, I'm not sure it is.

The $13 Billion Industry Is In No Fear Of Collapse, But Why Take Chances?

The blogger that quotes the press release remarks that Larry Flint of Hustler and Joe Francis of Girls Gone Wild do a good job of pointing out absurdity by being absurd, but I'm not sure that's their intent.

At least they're honest in their whoring, as compared to the UAW.

The first step a tyrant takes is disarming the people.

It looks like that step is about to be taken.

"The submission is H.R. 1022 by New York Democrat Carolyn McCarthy and 67 co-sponsors. It was introduced in February 2007 and the next month referred to the House Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security, where it has
stayed."

Not surprising, there--they knew they had same chance of getting it passed as the ice dog's chance chasing the asbestos cat through hell, to paraphrase Robert Heinlein.

"But that could change in the 111th Congress, sworn in today. And Korwin said the plan would allow the U.S. Attorney General – possibly Holder – to add to the list of guns banned to the public any 'semiautomatic rifle or shotgun originally designed for military or law enforcement use, or a firearm based on the design of such a firearm, that is not particularly suitable for sporting purposes, as determined by the Attorney General.'"

Umm...what? That kind of bans every semi-auto larger than .22. And I have a whole bunch of guns larger than .22. So does my husband. (By the way, these aren't all we have, so don't get any ideas.)

"'Note that … Holder … wrote a brief in the (District of Columbia) Heller case supporting the position that you have no right to have a working firearm in your own home,' Korwin said."

What part of "shall not be infringed" do they not understand?

"In making this determination, the bill says, 'there shall be a rebuttable presumption that a firearm procured for use by the United States military or any federal law enforcement agency is not particularly suitable for sporting purposes, and a firearm shall not be determined to be particularly suitable for sporting purposes solely because the firearm is suitable for use in a sporting event.'"

Every last one of my guns, except for my .22 pistol and rifles, and my .380, is military surplus. Each and every one (except for one which wasn't properly cared for long before it came into my possession) is superbly accurate. I use them for hobby shooting: taking my time and aiming each shot at the local conservation department gun range. Their incredible accuracy and militarily precise triggers make them eminently suited to sporting purposes, whether that is poking holes in paper or poking holes in game animals.

This is nothing more than a blatant attempt to disarm the people so that the government can do as it wishes without fear of its populace.

It's kind of scary to see my government following in the jackboot steps of Stalin, Mao, and Castro.

News flash: you can't dictate a higher price than what people are willing to pay in a free market.

Russia is being reminded that the world isn't a command economy. If no one is willing to pay what they want to charge for their natural gas, they won't be selling their natural gas. Yes, it hurts Europe, but Russia's stubbornness in pricing (likely because their economy's hurting) is going to hurt them far worse in the long run.

It's about time we got into the action.

I mean, seriously. If France has a naval force fighting Somali pirates--and succeeding--we look pretty piss poor if we don't get stuck in.

Fortunately, someone else came to that conclusion, too.

Fight it! Don't give in!

As I predicted, Israel is starting to get some external pressure to stop bullying the poor terrorist group.

I hope they don't give in to the pressure. Especially with Lebanon piling in. I hope President-Elect Obama has no one to open talks with by the time he enters office.

And I wish that they'd gone after Iran's nuclear capability first. If they had, they might not be facing quite as much trouble as they currently are, considering that both Hamas and Lebanon are nothing more than Iran's proxies in the region.

Go, Israel!

Last week, Israel responded to Hamas's most recent violation of the peace. They're rolling them up, quickly and easily, despite international disapproval.

Excellent work, guys. For what it's worth, you have my full support.

Here's why.

Iran is behind Hamas's choice of timing.

In fifteen more days, Israel's window for taking out Iran's nuclear capabilities will close.

If Hamas can drag out the conflict in the Gaza Strip for that much longer, this conflict that they've started will have served its purpose, and they'll be screaming to the U.N. to come in and force Israel--big, mean, bullying Israel, whose only crime is that they're successful in stopping rocket attacks and other terrorist attacks on their own people in their own country--to ceace fire. The peace that would come from that forced ceace fire would benefit Hamas by allowing them to regroup and attack Israel again when they're up to strength.

Why fifteen more days?

In fifteen more days, President-Elect Obama will take his oath of office. More likely than not, he will side with the U.N., which is, by the way, packed with Israel's enemies, in attempting to force a peace on the region.
And, unless Israel's government has grown a bigger set of balls than it has heretofore shown, Israel will cave to that pressure, because we're pretty much one of the only countries in the entire world that supports it, and thus far, they haven't wanted to lose that support.
They need to push the offensive, and make sure they finish the job in Gaza in time to accomplish what they need to with Iran.
Because, while President-Elect Obama has made noises about putting Israel under the nuclear umbrella with Japan (i.e., a nuclear attack on Israel is a nuclear attack on the U.S.A.), Iran not only won't care that we'll hit them back, but welcome it as the opening shot of the Apocalypse.

Sickening

And this is one of the reasons America is failing: the family unit is falling apart. Men aren't taught how to be men by their fathers. That's been made pretty clear in the case I linked to, where the father killed his child so he wouldn't have to pay child support.

And this shining example of fatherhood probably wanted, but didn't mention this desire, his child's mother to get an abortion. After all, one of the demographics that support abortion on demand is, after all, young men, who support it precisely because they do not want to be held responsible for their actions.

Call me pessimistic, but I doubt this individual will be sentenced to death, and actually executed. Ironic, that: the most guilty are allowed to live, while the most innocent are murdered, both before and after they're born.

I can't believe it!

Not only does France have at least one working naval vessel, but it actually didn't surrender when it came face to face with a Somali pirate vessel!

Good for them! Maybe the success, small though it was, can help France's armed forces learn to grow a pair.

Resolutions

Every year, about this time, most of us make resolutions for the new year. We resolve to lose weight, to use credit less, to eat at home more. We resolve to finish the things we'd started that need to be finished before we can move on to other things.

Why?

Because we all know that we're capable of being better than what we are.

That ability to better ourselves is what makes us Man and not beast. Of all of the creatures on the face of the earth, humanity alone is capable of denying his lower nature and reaching to become something better. Something more.

Few of us keep those resolutions through the entire year, but we make them. And many of us try to keep them. Most slip once, and decide that since they slipped, they've failed, and stop trying.

Of course they slip. Everyone does. Just because we're capable of bettering ourselves doesn't mean it's easy; in point of fact, it's almost impossible without determination and support. For example, say someone resolves that they'll quit smoking in the new year. They throw away their cigarettes, and declare that they're done.

For some that works. For others, however, it simply doesn't. It doesn't mean that they're weak, just that they need something to step in and help them quit smoking, whether that something is a nicotine patch, a self-help group, or a supportive friend or loved one to nag them about it.

If they falter and have a cigarette, they haven't failed--only slipped. Unless they decide it's too hard, and give up the attempt completely.

For the past several weeks, I've written about the Seven Deadly Sins (six down, one to go). At the end of each post, I mention that it's hard, but not impossible to fight the lower part of human nature that leads us into these faults. It's easily said, but not easily done.

However, nothing worth doing is easily done. Remember that when you slip with your New Year's Resolution. You've only failed if you stop trying to keep it.

Good.

A few days ago, I mentioned the gang rape of a woman in California. Well, the authorities have arrested four suspects, no thanks to the media which refused to publish physical descriptions.

Oh, wait: the two adults named were both Latino! Of course the media can't publish physical descriptions of criminals when the criminals are minorities! That's racist, because it's understood that if some minorities are violent, nasty people, all members of that minority group are violent, nasty people.

Actually, in my opinion, the refusal to describe some criminals because of their race is racist.

Everything I wanted to say, with far more eloquence.

Victor Davis Hanson sums up 2008 quite neatly.

Happy New Year

Here's hoping 2009 doesn't live down to what we're all afraid of (in no particular order):

Russian rearmament.

Gun bans (or what amounts to such).

A new depression worse than that of the 1930s.

Socialized medicine.

Free speech stifled.

A nuclear attack on one of our cities.

Global warming.

I think I have most of it covered. Did I miss anything? Post it in comments.
