Romney's a Mormon. So what? I certainly don't care. I was raised RLDS.* It isn't his religion I object to so much as it is the fact that the only beef he has with the current administration's policies is that a) the current administration isn't his party's, and b) he thinks they're taking us where he wants to take us way too fast: evolution, not revolution.
Santorum is a Catholic. So what? I certainly don't care. I agree with his ideas about abortion, if not contraception, and I don't care who wants to sleep with whom, so long as they keep it behind their bedroom doors. It isn't his religion, nor yet some of his beliefs I have issue with. It's the fact that he doesn't believe that we, the people, should be in control of our own lives. Borepatch nailed it here.
Obama seems to be a Muslim...wait. No, I do care about that. Get the enemy out of the White House. I refuse to bow to Sharia law.
Really doesn't look like we have much of a choice: we have big government RINO, big government nanny state RINO, and the jackass currently infesting the oval office.

DeleteI heard all about the "Mormons" when I was a young man and got PCS orders to Hill Air Force Base, Ogden, Utah. Had more than a little trepidation. . . until I got there.
ReplyDeleteI'll tell you right now: In the late 70's with Vietnam still fresh on everyone's mind, those "Mormon" folks in Utah and Idaho treated me a lot better than did the folks in northern California, anywhere in Colorado and you can forget New York.
While I still do not prescribe to all the tenets of the Mormon faith, I have zero problems with them whatsoever. Their young men on missionary assignments are ALWAYS welcome in our house for refuge from weather or when in need of facilities or something cool to drink or to just get off their bikes and rest for a bit.
Romney's religion doesn't bother me, nor does his success in business. His politics are what bothers me.

I don’t understand why some people would be concerned with a Mormon as president? I spent 26 years active duty in the USAF, rising to the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. The man who taught me what it was to be a Senior NCO; to be a leader and manager of men was one of the most professional NCO’s I ever worked for who also was a Mormon Bishop. For five years he took me and other upcoming NCO’s under his wing and groomed us for increased responsibility; he led by example. He never tried to force his religion on anyone nor did he ever put his bishop duties ahead of his military obligations except for one occasion. On that occasion we had a KC-135 crash on landing, killing the flight crew of six men. The co-pilot was one of his church members and he left work, as the man’s minister, to tell his wife and children their husband/father would never be coming home again. Throughout my military career, I have witnessed Mormons serve honorably, putting their military duties before all else with many, like the co-pilot, paying the ultimate sacrifice.
ReplyDeleteAOA & Bob--I think people hear "Mormon," and they either imagine the bad old days of the (fictionalized) Old West, and think of the bad-guy greedy Mormon ranchers like from Riders of the Purple Sage that married way too many women way too young, and made them broodmare/slaves, or they think that "Mormon" means "not Christian."

And then there are those who hate Mormons for the same reason they hate Jehovah's Witnesses: they knock on doors and proselytize. And often, they're pushy about it.
Again, this is NOT why I don't like Romney as a candidate.
Oh I knew that all along. I was just commenting based upon the usual reaction I hear from folks who (ignorantly) say, "A Mormon will never be elected president."

The media seems to make a big deal out of Romney's religion, but for some strange reason, they're rather quiet on Obama's religion.
Reckon what I was trying to convey was that I actually have a great deal of admiration for the LDS, and I really don't have a problem with Mitt as a man.
Like you, my problems with him are as a politician.
But then again, that's my problem with ALL of the candidates. . .

Those Mormon Missionaries can be very pushy. Had two come to the house while I worked for that guy. My wife, home alone with our 2 year old, saw them park their car around the corner and then starat knocking on doors. When they got to our house, she didn't want to talk to them but they kept trying to get into the house. They even lied and said they would like to warm up for a minute as their car was far away. I told Frank what happened and he got quite upset and assured me it would never happen again in his district to anyone. You have the good and the bad with everyone.

DeletePushy missionaries do far more harm than good. They get people annoyed, and push them further away from God.
