Warning: this post is kind of personal, and kind of graphic. There's some pretty frank talk about erotica, porn, the differences or lack thereof. It was inspired by RobertM's post here. Do NOT click to read more if you don't want to know. And if you do it anyway, don't say I didn't warn you.
I read smut. Or erotica. Whatever you want to call it (but I don't think Carey's series falls under either term--not quite sure where that one fits). I may not like most romantic comedy, but some are tolerable, and I will, occasionally, watch it.
You know what all this has in common? It's porn aimed at women. It's fun stuff, and does the trick to help me relax. Yes, it does tend to stick to gender stereotypes, and yes, it does tend to portray women as submissive to men (sometimes in the outer edge of extreme), but there's not a damn thing wrong with that. Just go with whatever pushes your buttons.
I also read, look at, and watch porn. The stuff designed for men by men. It's very different from porn for women--it's a lot more visual, and the language in the written stuff is a lot less dressed up in fancy euphemisms (except for The Pearl, or de Sade, but I'm not sure where that fits, either). It sometimes objectifies women, but not in a demeaning way so much as a put-them-up-on-a-pedestal-and-make-them-cum-their-brains-out way.
Then again, it may just be the preferences of he-who-downloads.
Again, it's fun stuff. It helps me relax, and I enjoy it just as much as the other, woman-centric, porn. And again, there's not a damn thing wrong with it.
Desire is what it is. Fantasy is what it is. Unless someone's fantasy includes hacking someone else to pieces, then fucking the pieces, there's nothing wrong with any of it.
And nobody has a right to say any different, whether they're male, female, both, or neither, about anything that goes on inside anybody's head (or bedroom) but their own.

I'm doing a standing ovation right now, just so you know.
ReplyDeleteThank you...and thank you for writing the whole word, and not saying "standing o" like a headline a couple days ago said some racist black speaker got. That put bad pictures in my mind.
DeletePorn is porn is porn...........

OCM--Look up the term "erotica." Then see if you can find some to read. It's not "porn" by technical definition, but it is in practice.
DeleteI'm one of those old fashioned people who believes in spelling out his words, even in text messages and on Twitter when I bother.
ReplyDeleteWonderful...I wish I had students that thought like you. I'm lucky if they keep it out of their formal papers.
DeleteI am aghast.
ReplyDeleteNo...wait...it was just that spicy jambalaya.
Don't worry, I'm fine now.
Spicy jambalaya? Are you sure it isn't your wife that's been gassed? o.O
