A candidate...

for Oldcatman's "head up ass" award: the TSA.  For thoroughly humiliating a nursing mother because the agent in question had 1. No understanding of the rules, 2. No understanding of what breastpumps look like (or, arguably, what breasts look like), and 3. No compassion.

  1. I've stopped going to airports because of those illiterate storm troupers. TSA was such a BAD idea it's hard to believe it's still there - even though bureaucracies are notoriously hard to kill. I will literally drive from the West coast to the east cost before I'll go though an airport (and I have a pilots license) - it's not the flying it's the idiots in the TSA.

    1. I've never flown. I likely never will--at least, not until the TSA quits harassing everyone who is most unlikely to be a terrorist, and ignoring those who are likely to be one.

  2. I haven't flown since '99, probably will not fly again. Ever. Because it seems that the TSA "rules" depend on the agent applying them, and the passenger they are being applied to.

I found flying to be stressful at the best of times - I'm kind of claustrophobic and I really really hate crowds. Feeling like I was being treated like a potential criminal would just make it much worse. (And I'd probably get pulled aside for the "special" treatment, seeing as I'm a nervous flier and nervous in crowds...)

    1. I have major problems with crowds--they cause panic attacks--but I can't imagine flying while claustrophobic. How in the world did you manage?

    2. I pretty much white-knuckled it. Brought some kind of absorbing book and prayed I didn't get stuck in the middle of a row with a stranger on either side of me. I also counted down the time until landing and me being able to get off the plane.

I can travel by train just fine, but then again, you're less cramped (especially if you spring for a roommette like I do), and you can actually SEE stuff outside the window.
