I don't want to live in that particular David Weber nation...

In the Honor Harrington series of books (often compared to the classic Horatio Hornblower series), David Weber sets up a few different star nations, among them being The Republic of Haven.

Haven, as a nation, had a huge number of its citizens "on the dole"--living on ever-increasing government handouts.  Every so often, Haven would have an economic crisis, declare a war on a small, productive, neighboring star nation, then "spread the wealth" amongst their other systems and citizens, all while "introducing the benefits" of Havenite rule (namely, socialism and government handouts).  This was a repeating process, because once a person sees everything they've worked hard for taken to be given to those who won't work, they stop working.  This works on an individual level pretty much immediately.  It may take a little longer on a larger scale, but it never fails to occur.

We are well on the path to become Haven.  Almost half the citizens of the United States are on some form of government handouts.   And our great zero in the White House has arranged for the "benefits" to increase, without paying attention to the actual costs, nor to who will bear those costs.

We, as a nation, need to stop feeding and caring for those who refuse to work.  Stop mandatory Medicaid.  Stop paying for women's illegitimate children--after the first, either they can get the implant, get their tubes tied, or find an actual, responsible man and get married.  No more increased benefits for more babies to single mamas that don't give a shit for their kids.  Stop paying for able-bodied young men and women to sit on their asses.  Stop giving our high school students inflated expectations of what they're worth in the work world, and start teaching them that honest work is beneath no one.

If we can't stop the slow slide into socialism, we're going to wind up going the way of Haven: declaring war on smaller, productive nations, integrating them, and robbing them of their self-determination as we rob them of their money.

    1. Less that than the 99% voting themselves bread and circuses until the empire has to expand through conquest to be able to fund the habits of the masses.

  2. Eventually, The Havenites end up having a revolution, and the "People's Republic" bunch is thrown out.

Just finishing up "War of Honor" now.

    1. Webber is setting up a new larger game when you get to "Mission of Honor" and "A Rising Tide".
