Going back to paper food stamps would solve this kind of fraud, too. No way to "lose" a debit card, no need to replace a "lost" one.
We'd also have to tighten the regulations on what a food stamp dollar would buy, again, of course, but that's beside the point.

The government went to the EBT card to save money. They can put cash and food stamps on the same card. The Fed saves on printing the stamps and the states save on printing and mailing checks. There has always been "misuseage" been going on for a long time.
ReplyDeleteIf these people spent the same amount of time looking for work or starting a business as they do misusing their benefits, we could cut way down on the these programs.
If you look at the costs in mailing a check. paper for check, ink for check, envelope for check, staffing to handle check, postage for check, mail carrier delivering check, client going to bank or check cashing place to get check cashed.
Banks having to bring in extra cash on the first and second day of the month.
I could go on and on.
I am more concerned about THIS:

Rob--by making it more convenient, and making it cheaper for themselves, the government removed the motivation to make sure it wasn't abused and removed the motivation to make sure it only went to those who truly need it. Then, they encouraged everyone to apply for foodstamps and other aid.
DeleteI could go on and on, too. As a taxpayer, I'd rather pay for the paper foodstamps.
OCM--those "facts" are greatly exaggerated: they're spun to give justification for more money to be funneled into schools to feed kids three meals a day year round of food and propaganda. Those "facts" also fail to take into account those who refuse to budget money to feed the kids because it prevents them from buying designer clothes and accessories, electronics, and games.
