Wow. Talk about acts perfectly designed...

...to further damage the economy.  I wonder if the retards in the Senate that voted for the Marketplace Fairness Act realize that, should this pass the House, people will STOP SPENDING MONEY.  Yes, we can get books cheaper through Amazon, but that's not the only reason I spend money there.  I spend money there because I don't have to hand more money to an entity hostile to my rights.

Yes, that's right.  I buy books from Amazon BECAUSE I don't pay taxes when I purchase from Amazon.

This is nothing more than corporate protectionism--which never works as intended.

  1. I wouldn't call it "corporate protectionism", I'd call it a brazen tax grab from the buyer!

    1. Considering Barnes and Noble and Wal-Mart are major backers, it's at least partially corporate protectionism.

  2. Unless they've got some kind of "for gross sales under multiple millions of dollars," this is probably going to put a number of small businesses that do a lot of sales on line out of business. Amazon and Wal-Mart and the other mega retailers who sell online have the army of accountants and can afford the software to deal with some 48 different states' worth of sales taxes (and, I suppose, eventually, all the municipalities'). But someone who is a small producer, no.

So, if you like unusual things, if you like stuff different than what you can get at the Wal-Mart, stock up now. I suspect MANY small businesses will be gone after this passes and I'm angry about it.

Shopping in my town SUCKS so I have to do a lot of it online. So now I get to pay BOTH shipping and handling AND state sales tax AND pay a "use tax" on my state taxes that allegedly covers sales taxes not paid because I shopped out of state.

    Grrr.

  3. Er, "for gross sales under multiple millions of dollars" EXEMPTION.

I was so irritated I left out an important word there.

But yeah, this is, I think, just more evidence that the govt. doesn't care a crap about the small businessperson and just wants to keep supporting the megaretailers.

  4. I'm not sure there is an exemption. I haven't found one.

    1. Crap. I better order all the small-company indie stuff I think I might possibly want for the next 50 years, before those places go under and we are left with "We never said we sold stuff made in America" wal-mart and its ilk.

Damn, but the admin and Congress keep doing more and more stupid stuff. I'm almost afraid to see what they dream up next.
