I will admit, John Stossel, with his reach, has a much better chance of convincing people, but he doesn't say anything in his article equating the war on drugs with Prohibition that I hadn't been saying for a long time.
Legalize it all. Regulate it all. Tax it all. Stop telling us that it's bad for us, so we can't use it. Everything is bad for us, in sufficient volume. Refusing to let people make their own choices about drugs is insulting to their independence and intelligence.

When I have the time I'm taking on Wetwipes. Those suckers are dangerous. Ban 'em all.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Stephen--you crack me up.
DeleteThe main problem I have with legalizing all drugs is some of them can wreck your brain permanently. A kid can experiment with booze or tobacco and be OK (unless they abuse it for years) but some drugs can fry your brain after very few times. I don't see any point in legalizing crack for example. JMHO.
ReplyDeleteDo you really think they're not getting it now? If it's legalized, it can be regulated to be as relatively safe as possible, as well as regulated to make it at least a little harder for teens to get their hands on. And taxed harsher than cigarettes or alcohol to put it out of their reach to afford.
DeleteI see your point however if the government made it safer and less potent there would soon be a need for more potent illegal drugs again and if it was taxed too high there would still be a black market. When prohibition ended it did not end illegal moonshine.
DeleteI also tend to think kids reason if the government approves of it then it must be OK.
The other part of me says legalize it all and let the Darwin Effect take over, which is what will happen in effect.
Honestly, a little Darwinism in action might not be such a bad thing.
