Of course it must be at it's slowest setting when I need to be building my new course for my new students. It's like the f#@king embodiment of Murphy's Law, and it's corollary.
Blackboard. And they don't have the most recent updated package that's compatible with the most recent browser updates. Apparently, they cost more than what the university either has, or is willing to spend.
Ohhhhh, I LOATHE Blackboard. And I only use it as a virtual gradebook/place to post handouts and crap so the students who skip class can't accuse me of being unfair to them by withholding information.
Also, I loathe Blackboard for what it has done to student *attitudes.* I had a student this summer accuse me of specifically wanting her to fail because I "didn't send her" one of the handouts I put up on Blackboard (It turned out I had not put it up yet. And she thought I was avoiding giving her access just to be mean). I also get harassed by students if I get busy and don't update the page RIGHT after the class meeting.
I can see how it's a necessity in a distance-learning class, but in face-to-face classes, it helps feed student sense of entitlement. I don't give it up because there are those diligent students who print out the Powerpoint slides and stuff and take notes on them....but it allows the Snowflakes to be even more Snowflakey, I've found.
Yeah...when I went to Blackboard enhancement, I posted all of the handouts to the site, and required them to print them themselves and bring them as part of their supplies. I kept a few copies for a few who forgot, but when the same people kept "forgetting," I quit bringing them. Talk about whining...
I wanted them used to checking Blackboard. I didn't go to Blackboard enhancement until the fall semester I was pregnant with the imp, and I thought they'd have to spend the last week or so dealing with it. I wanted them used to it before I was in the hospital. Turned out, the class went to completely distance learning eight weeks sooner than I had planned. Yes, I had several drop, and several fail, but I also had several visit me in the hospital, and tell me that putting the class on Blackboard was an excellent idea.
Sorry, folks. A hundred plus spam comments in an hour equals moderation on older posts, so until further notice...you're gonna have to wait for your comments to be approved before they show up.
Moodle or Blackboard? Yeah it sucks at the start of the semester.
